Welcome to our little space of the web.

After buying a cute little mill house in Five Points, renovating it and thinking we would never live anywhere else we decided to move. To a rancher. A pink rancher. So not us. But, it will be, with time, elbow grease and good contractors! From the first time we walked in the front door we knew we were home. The new house is right around the corner from my parent's house where I grew up. We are so excited for Matthew and Charlotte to grow up here, riding bikes, going to the pool, playing in the woods... my childhood was filled with freedom and wonder allowed by a safe neighborhood that I could explore and make my place in the world. I am thrilled we can give that to our children.

These days our blog is filled with the adventures of Mateo and Charlotte...mixed in with a few home projects and recipes. But mostly the kids take front and center. Join us on the adventure!

Happy Easter!

Today we celebrated Easter at Aunt Christie's house.  Matthew was generally fussy and annoyed by the rambunctious atmosphere.  Here are some random pics from the day.

Matthew was not terribly impressed with the Easter egg hunt.  Next year!

Thoughts From a Tired Mind

Good morning and Happy Easter, everyone. Rebecca and I have been enjoying a gentle morning with RM. This little guy has grown 'poof' and 'squish' all over himself.  He's quite the squishy baby now.  He's grown more snuggly, more chatty, more gripy, and more glowing.  I'm almost three months into fatherhood and I really haven't learned a thing. At this age there is still so much more reaction than preemption, although RM seems to be settling into a better schedule.

I've been having quite a blast hanging out with him with what little time I've had.  I work at least sixty hours weeks this time of year, so the time I spend with RM has a special quality for the short time I'm given each day to spend with him.  You might say I get intense, but not to the point of actually gobbling up my child in one sitting. Our night routine is not consistent yet. He is supposed to get a bath each night where he sits in his bumbo in the tub and I pour hot water over him.  He loves it.  He is supposed to get a Bible story each night from the "Little Boys Bible Storybook" that was given to him by his godparents, John & Melinda.  We figured he wasn't ready for the KJV-type stuff or RC Catechism just yet, so this is perfect.  The one thing he is getting consistently from me each night is lullabies.  I sing to him some of the old gospel stuff like "Stars in My Crown" and "Rock of Ages."  I would sing Hank Sr. and John Prine. He will hear a sea shanty or two. I would also sing the old timey stuff like "Dixieland" and "Rose of Alabama," songs that every Southerner used to know. So we just go honky tonkin' together in the nursery, and it will knock him right out. I am really excited about exposing Matthew to plenty of music in a world that seems more obsessed with visual stimuli. Matthew always gets plenty of Pandora playing anything from Sufjan Stevens to Steely Dan.

I can see that Matthew is becoming quite the chatty little baby.  Even when he is not squeeling and fussing in the morning, he is chatty in the early hours like his mother.  I'm not exactly a morning person, so this development does not bode well for quiet mornings in my future.  I do, however, try to foster his his talkative nature by asking him plenty of questions.  I have this strange theory where I believe that the power of the interrogative is something ingrained in us biologically, and questions are perhaps recognizable even before we can understand them . Ancient humans living in the 00000's before Christ could not have evolved complex societies without the interrogative. The "question" places us in constant context in our relationship with others and the world around us. It gives us meaning. Human inquiry is one of the greatest of God's gifts.  Its divine purpose, of course, is to ask the question of our existence and seek the face of God for answers. Coincidentally, it prompts us to action and to accumulate knowledge to satisfy an ever mounting load of human inquiry. "How can I more effectively kill a sabre toothed tiger at range without endangering myself? How can I get Mom and Dad to understand that I will never fall asleep again for the rest of my life? How can I send 12,000 tons of payload into low-earth orbit?"

So I think just babbling to babies is pointless unless you are babbling out pointless questions.  Questions carry that subtle inflection, that hidden open-endedness that appeal to our primeval need for inquiry, and that answers can be had from our relationship with the world around us.  I don't want Matthew to ever think that we have all the answers. That could only lead to disappointment... and disappointment leads to the Dark Side of the Force.

My busy season ends on April 17th.  I'll be taking a few days off. I'm really looking forward to taking Matthew on hikes on Monte Sano.  I'll roll him down to 1892 where I can enjoy a beer and he can meet Mike, Steve, Greg and all the other nice folks there.  The ladies at Five Points Cleaners are dying to meet him.  He can say hi to Roy and Mike over at the Star Market. Matthew can finally meet everyone at the office where we are all diligently working to put each other's kids into college.  Matthew is just going to grow up to be a good ole boy.

Back to work

I go back to work on Monday.  Crazy.  How in the world has 12 weeks come and gone so quickly?  On the one hand I am thrilled to get back to work, be around adults and use the 8-5 as an excuse to get into some semblance of a schedule.

On the other hand, well, you can imagine.  What am I going to miss by spending 9 or so hours away from him 5 days a week?  Am I making the right decision?  What is best for our family?  Will he be ok at daycare? Will he miss me?  Or will he even notice he's not with me?  How in the world are they going to get him to sleep in a crib?

Right now his needs are simple: a little love, momma's milk, and a clean diaper.

No matter how I work it out, nothing seems like the right answer.  So, I am headed back to work on Monday.  In the meantime here are some pics from our last weeks of maternity leave.

Dex adores his new master.  He follows Matthew around.  If Matthew is crying Dex comes and lets me know.  It is so so sweet.

We trekked up to the park at Monte Sano and had a nice stroll. We decided we need to picnic up there often!  It's literally in our backyard and there's no excuse for not getting out!

Two Months Old!

Road Trip

I haven't been able to post for a while due to a major computer crash.  Unfortunately we lost most of our pictures from February.  Very frustrating.  But, in the grand scheme of things, I guess it isn't that big of a deal.  Who needs pictures when you have Robert Matthew in the flesh, right?

Finally I have replaced the computer so here's what's been going on.  Matthew went on his first big road trip to visit the Duhon's in south Louisiana and then the Bairds in north Louisiana.  He did really well in the car...no small feat for a 2 month old.  Here are a few pics.

Just chillin at a rest stop

Time Flies!

I can't believe I am over half way through maternity leave, Matthew will be 7 weeks old on Tuesday!  Where has the time gone?  On one hand, I can't wait to go back to work, but on the other I am dreading it.  Thankfully I get to ease back into things and will only be working mornings for the first few weeks.

Matthew is growing like a weed and becoming more and more responsive and spends a little more time each day awake and interacting.  He loves looking out the window and he discovered the tree and the birds in his nursery this week.  He's even started smiling!  It's so much fun to talk with him and show him our little corner of the world.

We try and get out at least once a day.  My parents being so close has been a godsend in this regard.  I typically pack up and go over to their house several times a week.  LB is thrilled to spend some time with Matthew and I enjoy working on one of my "projects", whether its organizing photos, making the weekly food menu or running errands.  Matthew even got to attend his first continuing education class with me :-)

Wigglebug on the play mat at LB's house!
My mom has declared that she has never met a baby that farts as much as Matthew.  While it can be comical, it also indicates he is one gassy baby, which means a lot of discomfort for him after he eats.  I am on the verge of committing to no dairy and no caffeine for the next 2 weeks to see if it helps anything.  I honestly don't know if I can do it.  More than 50% of my calories are coming from dairy these days and I simply adore my cafe mocha every day...

LB helping move some of that gas!

He is still sleeping in the rock-n-play.  For a while now, I have been saying I am going to let him sleep in the living room, but every night I cave and put him next to me in our bedroom.  I also say I am going to start putting him down during the day either in his crib or cradle so he can start getting used to sleeping on his back...that hasn't happened either :-)

Snoozing in the rock-n-play
Some of the nicknames that have cropped up over the last few weeks include:
- Wigglebug or Mr. Wiggles: for obvious reasons
- Robert M:  one of my dad's best friends affectionately calls my father Robert L. and I had never noticed until the other evening at dinner - I just love it!
- Mateo: spanish version of Matthew

Other than the gas, he is a happy growing baby!
